Matthew Cowan
General Sessions Judge
Matthew Cowan was elected as General Sessions and Juvenile Court Judge for Cannon County in August 2022. He has been in private law practice in Woodbury since 2015, after being admitted to the Tennessee Bar that same year. He earned his law degree from the Belmont University College of Law in Nashville. During law school, Matt served as legal extern to the Cannon County General Sessions Court. He obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree Magna Cum Laude in Political Science from Tennessee Tech University, with minors in English and Speech Communication. During undergraduate studies, Matt served on the Tennessee Tech Student Supreme Court and was a member of the Tennessee Tech Moot Court team.
Matt is the former City Attorney for Woodbury, Tennessee. In addition, he has previously served as City Attorney for Morrison, Tennessee. He is the former delinquent tax attorney for Cannon County and the Town of Woodbury, Tennessee, and previously served as attorney for the Cannon County Industrial Development Board.
He served as a co-founding board member of Cannon County CASA and is a past Chairman of the board of directors. He is a current member of the board of directors for the Cannon County Senior Center.
Matt and his family are residents of Cannon County and are members of First Baptist Church Woodbury.
